Zia
Fun Brunch, Super Fresh Lunch, & Great Coffee
There is a shortage of really quality restaurants in the 7th. But you know who is usually in the 7th at some point on their trip to Paris? Everyone. Because it doesn’t matter how many times you’ve been to Paris; At some point you have to make your way over to visit our lady la Tour Eiffel. Aside from a few gems (Chez l’Ami Jean, David Toutain, Pottoka), it’s slim pickins. Sure, Les Cocottes is a good stand-by and will do the trick for lunch or an easy dinner.
But you know what’s really not present in the 7th? A good brunch, or a simple, healthy lunch.
Well hang onto your brunch hats, because there is a new gem on the block: Zia.
Zia is the symbol on the flag of New Mexico, a sun symbol of the Pueblo tribe (and the little stripes you see coming out of the “Zia” on the logo. The chef and owner, Justin Kent, has roots in Santa Fe.
Not only is it super cute, but they have a fantastic brunch on the weekends and some super fresh, delightful lunch and dinner options (think market-driven small plates and salads). Fresh and delicious on this level is surprisingly hard to find in this area, so that makes Zia stand out.
Justin has experience working for Alain Passard at Arpège, David Toutain (at his previous restaurant, Agape Substance), and at Verjus, so that explains a thing or two.
Breakfast/Brunch
The weekend brunch is the shining beacon, worth planning your Eiffel Tower visit around, or, dare I say, worth leaving the 10th if you live in Paris.
I am talking breakfast burritos (a rare find in Paris) with spicy Santa Fe enchilada sauce.
Your Instagram would be embarrassing with a standard avocado toast, so don’t even think about it. But this one has cucumber, chili flakes, sorrel, and sesame seeds on it, so the people must see it.
And most importantly, I’d like to direct your attention to the Dutch baby pancakes, served in a cast iron skillet and topped with a fried egg (See above, and don’t make me draw an arrow on it; we’re not on Snapchat. You see the skillet. There it is.). A Dutch baby pancake is apparently the same thing as a Yorkshire pudding in the UK, and is neither a pancake as you’d normally think of it, nor a pudding (unless you’re British).
Dutch baby pancakes are pancake batter cooked in a cast iron pan so that they puff up, and they are filled with different deliciousness.
At Zia, you can get it with bacon, cheese and a fried egg; or cherry tomatoes, red onion and goat cheese with an egg; or a sweet version with crème fraiche, homemade jam, fruit and maple syrup. I would like all three, please. For myself.
COFFEE
Who likes coffee? Everyone? Me, too. They have coffee roasted by Coutume (both filter and espresso). They also offer one of the only Nitro Cold Brews on tap in the city.
Think of Nitro Cold Brew as the equivalent of drinking Guinness in the form of coffee, with a creamier texture and slightly sweeter, even when served black.
They also serve the rare treat of coffee to go…So let’s forget Starbucks for a moment, being in France and all, and get an even better coffee made with Coutume roasted beans. Take that to the Eiffel Tower. Also…you can get the breakfast burrito to go. Mic drop.
WINE
For wines, they have a selection of organic, biodynamic and natural wines and Champagne, making it a great spot to have a glass of wine after a visit to the Eiffel Tower.
Did I mention the cuteness? I mean, all we want is to hang out in a cute cafe, sipping our coffee and wine in Paris, right? Well, here you go.
